Email Marketing to Customers
Email Marketing is a form of marketing that uses an emailed newsletter or emailed broadcast message(s) which allows business owners to connect quickly and easily with their customers.
This helps in forming a relationship with their customers.
The mechanism that is used to enable this email marketing is commonly called an “Autoresponder”.
What can this do for your business? This will start to form the basis of a valuable relationship with your customers who will look forward to receiving your emails. As well as sending out occasional, useful, valuable information for free to your customers (perhaps a DIY tip), below we have listed just a few examples of what can be done with email marketing but please note, it is our recommendation that you never over email your clients, keep contact via this method to no more than once per week:
- Notification of up coming Sales
- Give them monthly discount coupons (they need to quote a discount code in your shop) – promise to send these out on at least a monthly basis as this will help to retain your customers on your list because of the promise of future and regular savings.
- Use an “Instant Broadcast” to let them know of an up and coming sale period (could be one week long or more), however, as a thank you to your loyal customers, they get exclusive access to a pre-sale day (which starts before the normal sale), on a set day where they will gain a further 10% off the up coming sale prices, this also gives them first look at all the good stuff before it all flies off the shelf!
There are many more ways you can use an email marketing list but the main point being, you give your customers something your competitor doesn’t and you keep your business name in their minds on a regular basis, which means repeat customers for you.
However, there is a right way to set this up and then there is a wrong way (which can have legal implications), which is why we have provided email marketing packages to make sure it is done the right way and these are listed below but first..
What is an autoresponder?
Quite simply, it’s a piece of software that enables you to send one email (or newsletter email) to lots of different people at the same time. This doesn’t mean that it writes the emails for you, and it doesn’t involve spam or sending unsolicited email because these people have previously agreed to receiving your communication via their email account by a process called ‘opting in’. Opt-in, is a process required in order that your are in compliance with “CanSPAM” laws.
There are many autoresponders companies to choose from on the web, however, we recommend either Aweber or GetResponse because of their outstanding deliverability results (when sending out mass emails it is very easy to trigger spam filters simply because of the mass amount an Autoresponder company may be sending in any one day), these two companies both have extremely good track records in this department and make sure that everything they or their clients do is “CanSPAM” compliant.
How does “Opting in” work?
A Customer will commonly enter their name and email address into an ‘opt in’ form, either on paper or more usually on a website. Their email address is then entered into the Autoresponder system and usually, within minutes they will receive an automated email to check that they did indeed fill out the form and in order to confirm that it was them, they need to click a link contained within the email.
If they do not click the link then no further communication will be sent. In addition, every email message, broadcast or newsletter that you then send to them will always contain a link at the end for the customer to easily “unsubscribe” from the list. Again, this is necessary to be “CanSPAM” compliant. Clicking a link and having an unsubscribe on every communication protects both you and your client.
How Can an Autoresponder be used?
There are many ways to use an Autoresponder to manage your email marketing, you can “pre-load” the autoresponder with a series of emails that you set to be emailed out to your customer, the first one commonly being a welcome message perhaps telling them what to expect from being a member of your customer email list, you would set the first one to go out immediately, or within a day, then next can be one week later and so on, it is up to you to decide the length of time between each one.
Another way you can also use an autoresponder is to send out a “broadcast message” to your client list and this really means, an email that is outside of the pre-set, pre-loaded emails and is a “one-off”, for instance, you may use a broadcast message to let your customers know you have a sale coming up. You can send as many “broadcast emails” as you wish. With some autoresponders, you can even segment your client list so that you can send different things to different groups.
