Search Engine Optimisation or SEO as it is commonly referred to is used to make sure your website will be found when someone types in their search words into any search engine, such as Google, Yahoo, MSN or Ask (Jeeves).  Have you have heard the new but now widely used phrase “Google it”, well that is what SEO is for, so that when someone does “google it” that indeed they will find your website amongst the search results page (and hopefully on the first page and near the top).  For instance..

If you want to find a decent plumber in your area because you just got a burst pipe and you go and use your computer to find someone, probably using google (as it is the most popular), you are going to type in the word “Plumber” aren’t you?

Yes of course you are – and most likely you will also put in your local area name.  Now supposing there is a brilliant plumber called Mr Jones and he has a fantastic website but the website is not SEO’d in any way shape or form then when you type in “Plumber Ammanford” then you can pretty much bet that with over 180 million websites and growing on the net today, www.jonesandson.co.uk is not going to come up in those search results (that is a fictitious website by the way). 

Put it another way, a fantastic website without any decent SEO is rather like having a wonderful shop, on a very, very busy high street but guess what, the shop has no windows nor a front door so none of the people passing by will even know it’s there.

Unfortunately, many people think that as long as you have a brilliant website, with all the usual bells and whistles then it’s going to help your business, not so, people need to be able to find you first and foremost and your pretty website that is not using some kind of SEO is pretty much useless to you – apart, of course, from when you hand out business cards, but then those people already know about you, don’t they but SEO is not about your existing clients, it’s all about making sure you don’t leave any money on the table from all those people who do not yet know you exist and who regularly search for a business like yours on the internet.

Search Engines such as Google use many factors (which they change all the time) to determine what a website is all about such as “keywords” and in our example above of Mr Jone’s website, the top keyword would be “plumber”. 

So you can see that a properly SEO’d website is going to help that process immensely and ensure that your website is one of the sites listed in the search results.
